New Forest Daily is an independent news and information site for the New Forest district. We work from public records, we cite them, and we are not connected to the council, the park authority or anybody else we report on.

Where we cover

Lymington and Milford on the coast, New Milton and Barton on Sea to the west, Ringwood and Fordingbridge on the Avon, Totton and Hythe on the Southampton side, and Lyndhurst and Brockenhurst in the middle of the forest. The council has its offices at Lyndhurst. The forest itself is not scenery here, it is a working common with grazing rights attached, and the arrangements that govern it are old, specific and worth understanding when a story touches them.

Two authorities, and which is which

New Forest District Council: bins, car parks, licensing, housing, council tax collection. New Forest National Park Authority: planning decisions inside the park boundary. Hampshire County Council: roads, schools, social care. A great many local questions are sent to the wrong one of the three, so we name the responsible body in every story and on every reference page.

What we work from

The district council’s committee papers and registers, the national park authority’s planning register, licensing notices, police.uk crime data, HM Land Registry sold prices, Food Standards Agency hygiene ratings, Environment Agency flood and coastal warnings for the Avon and the Solent shore, and company filings in The Gazette. Where a record is unclear we say it is unclear.
